Sound and Interactivity
Research in interactive systems for music making at SARC focuses on the design of new musical instruments, sound installations and locative media, and the study of how performers and spectators develop and understand novel interactions with technology in practice. Emerging technologies such as biometric sensing, haptics, sensor networks and mobile computing are used at all stages of this research including experimentation, implementation and evaluation. In addition to design practice, specific activities in this area include the development of hardware and software for real-time sound synthesis, the development of techniques for sensing physical gestures and emotional state, and the development of theoretical and cognitive bases for understanding novel performance from the perspectives of designers, performers and audiences.
